Photography Permits

This is a photography permit we acquired for a pet photography session in Meridian Hill Park in Washington, DC

If your pet photography session is taking place in a public location often we will need a permit to photograph there.  Any commercial photography requires a permit in most locations.  The definition of commercial photography differs between agencies but generally follows these main guidelines:

  • The session is being paid for (money is exchanging hands)
  • Photography involving a model (your pet)
  • A professional photographer is capturing the images (Outside The Lines)

Permits allow the government and the parks to continue to pay for maintenance and keep them as public locations.  Having a permit means there won't be multiple events going on at the same time allowing the park to be used freely.  The price for a permit ranges from about $85 - $250 in the DC, Maryland, and Virgina areas.  The average photography permit in DC is about $160.

If we are doing a photography session with your dog and a permit is required you would need to pay the permit fee before we can guarantee a session.  We will take care of filing for the permit and communicating with the correct agency.  All you have to do is submit the payment so we can forward it as the registration fee.

While it does not happen very often, we have been asked by park police for our permit.  It never causes a problem because we always have it on hand.  However, if we did not have a permit the park police would require us to leave the park and we would not be able to photograph your pet.

There are some locations were they do not require a permit or the fee is low and we will cover the cost.  Generally they are in the Virginia areas such as Falls Church, Arlington County, and Alexandria County.  For DC pet photography a permit is required for any public park or location.  If you have any questions about locations and permits please contact us and we can go over the options.  We are looking forward to photographing your pets and can't wait to speak with you!
