Why Photograph During The Sunrise?
Sunrise photography sessions can create some of our most dramatic and memorable images. In the early morning there are very few people around, and the light is very soft and even. Also, the temperature is often cooler which keeps the dogs from overheating. In the DC area we often we focus on including a monument in the background, but we are glad to do a sunrise session anywhere.
Dates and Times for Sunrise Pet Photography
These sessions only occur from September 1st – April 1st. After those dates the sunrise often occurs exceptionally early, which is much earlier than we would like to be up! Most of the time these sessions take place on a weekend, often on a Sunday. They start 50 minutes before “official sunrise” and this will be sometime between 5:45am – 6:30am. The first 20-30 minutes is spent waiting for just the right light and doing test images until the perfect moment arrives. After that, the most vibrant light will occur about 10-30 minutes before official sunrise. Once the sun is fully up we move on and capture images like we would in a more typical session.
Sunrise Session Cost
There are a few reasons sunrise sessions cost more. The overall sessions last longer, we rent an additional backup camera, and we bring a small amount of extra equipment including lights and light stands. The cost for a sunrise session is $400 rather than our standard $200 session fee. Any permit fees will still need to be paid. Prints, wall art, and digital images are purchased separately.
Things to Know
These sessions often involve a bit of luck. Unfortunately, we cannot always guarantee a vibrant or dramatic sunrise. If it ends up being overcast there will not be a dramatic sunrise. However, a very small amount of clouds is great for the sunrise. The light reflects off the clouds and gives dimension to the images, so we prefer periodic clouds or a slightly cloudy sky.
Sunrise photography that occurs before April or after October will likely be cold and you will want to bring something to bundle your dog in. You will also want to bring warm clothes for yourself as well. This means short-haired dogs will likely do best during a September sunrise session which is warmer.
Dog Training Level
This is one of the few sessions where it helps to have a slightly trained dog. Generally, if we are photographing in front of the Washington DC monuments your dog will need to be able to sit in place for at least a few seconds. Our animal assistant will help with this and get your dog focused and in place. Your dog will be on a leash which will just be edited out after. If the session is occurring with a more general background such as a beach or your own yard then they don’t need as much training. Keep in mind they will still need to be in a small general area since we will have lights set up that need to be focused on your pet.
